hospital and mention any illness you may have had to staff. Ensure
that you, staff and visitors wash their hands or use a hand
sanitiser before coming into contact with you and the baby.
Your Home Birth
How can I keep myself and my baby healthy during a home birth?
Make sure that your home is hygienically as well as visibly clean,
by disinfecting as well as removing surface dirt. Also, ensure
that you, your partner and the midwife regularly and thoroughly
wash hands or use a hand sanitiser, particularly before touching
the baby or eating, and after using the toilet.
Protecting Your Baby
What washing powder should I use for my baby’s clothes?
When using a washing machine, don't use washing powders with
enzymes (bio powders) or fabric conditioner, as they may irritate
your baby's skin. Always rinse clothes thoroughly.
How can I protect my baby from germs?
Make sure that you and any visitors wash your hands or use a hand
sanitiser before you touch your baby, and after feeding or
changing their nappy. Safely clean and disinfect any areas that
your baby will come in contact with and ensure bottles are
correctly sterilised.
How do I know if a toy is safe for my baby?
Read labels to make sure the toy is appropriate for your child's
age. Try not to buy toys that may have small parts or pose a
choking hazard. Remember, this labelling is related to
safety/choking hazards, not developmental abilities.
